Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, N.Y. - On Thursday night at Frontier Field the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Rochester Red Wings by a score of 4-3. Syracuse has now won four games in a row equaling its longest winning streak of the season. The Chiefs will play for a four game sweep of Rochester tomorrow.
Rochester (15-26) got on the board first with a Jason Repko solo home run in the third inning. That was one of five hits allowed by Syracuse starter Jeff Mandel (1-0). Following that home run, Mandel retired fifteen of the next seventeen batters to face him. He exited after seven innings giving up one run, walking one and striking out one. Mandel's seven innings were the longest outing by a Chiefs starter this season.
Syracuse (23-15) scored for the first time in the fifth inning. Pete Orr was hit by a pitch thrown by Red Wings starter Tyler Robertson (0-1) to start off the frame. Eric Bruntlett followed with a double and then Devin Ivany walked to load the bases. After a Justin Maxwell strikeout, Leonard Davis collected his first RBI at the Triple-A level this year on a single to score Orr. Josh Whitesell capped the scoring in the fifth with a two-run single to plate Bruntlett and Ivany. Whitesell leads the Chiefs with 27 RBI.
In the ninth inning, Kevin Mench hit an RBI single to score Justin Maxwell and extend the Syracuse lead to 4-1. However in the bottom half of the inning against Atahualpa Severino, the Red Wings got two of the first three runners on base. Syracuse closer Joel Peralta came in and allowed a two run single to Repko which cut the Chiefs lead to just one. Peralta was able to close out the game though for his eleventh save in as many tries.
On Friday night, the Chiefs will play for a sweep of Rochester in the four game series. Shairon Martis (1-2, 5.86) is scheduled to start for Syracuse and Glen Perkins (0-5, 10.08) is scheduled to start for Rochester. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
