The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Norfolk Tides, 11-4, Sunday evening at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs scored six runs over the game's first two innings en route to their second win in three nights.
Syracuse (47-54) wasted no time getting to Norfolk starter Dana Eveland. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Eveland walked Josh Johnson and Jim Negrych to put runners on first and second base. Then, Chiefs clean-up batter Jesus Valdez blasted a double off the top of the wall in left-center field to drive home both Johnson and Negrych. Valdez came home to score on Carlos Rivero's two-out single to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.
The Chiefs matched that first inning three-spot with another three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Carlos Maldonado walked to start the frame and Manny Mayorson followed with a single. One out later, Johnson scored them both with a double to the right-center field gap to put the Chiefs up 5-0. Johnson then scored on a single by Negrych and the Chiefs led 6-0.
Norfolk (52-51) tried to chip away with the long ball. Joe Mahoney homered off Chiefs starter Yunesky Maya in the top of the fourth inning and Zelous Wheeler hit a solo shot in the fifth inning to cut the Chiefs lead to 6-2, but that was as close as the Tides would get.
Maya persevered to allow just two runs in six innings as he picked up his seventh win of the season.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs answered Norfolk with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, the Chiefs scored a run on Eury Perez's run scoring single that brought home Rivero. Syracuse then broke it open in the sixth. Brett Carroll blasted a three-run homer to left field, and Carlos Maldonado followed with a solo shot to right field to put the Chiefs up 11-2
The Tides whittled away at the Chiefs' lead a bit in the top of the seventh inning. Brandon Waring led off the inning with a homer off of Erik Arnesen and Wheeler scored on a groundout by Nate McLouth to make the score 11-4 Chiefs.
Arnesen would settle in from there, though, tossing a scoreless eighth inning with the help of a triple play. L.J. Hoes smashed a line drive off of Arnesen's leg that deflected out to second baseman Seth Bynum, who caught the ball and threw to second base for the second out. Shortstop Josh Johnson then tossed to first to complete the bizarre triple play.
Arnesen then threw a shutout ninth to close out the Tides.
The Chiefs and Tides wrap up their four-game set Monday night at 7:00 in Alliance Bank Stadium. Right-hander Jeff Mandel is slated to start for Syracuse. Norfolk will counter with Steve Johnson.
