Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Lawrenceville, GA - Corban Joseph's sixth home run of the season snapped a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (57-45) picked up a 4-3 win over the Gwinnett Braves (46-56) on Sunday night at Cool Ray Field in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
The Yankees got on the board in the top half of the first inning with the top two hitters in the lineup doing the damage off Braves starter Yohan Flande. Chris Dickerson led off the game with a single to right field, stole second base and scored on Kevin Russo's RBI single to right field giving SWB a 1-0 lead. Russo extended his hit streak to 13 games with his lone hit of the night.
SWB would get two more runs off Flande with Matt Antonelli's RBI single to center scoring Ramiro Pena who led off the Yankees fifth with a triple to the right field corner. Flande opened the seventh inning for Gwinnett and faced three hitters recording one out. After a one out double by Dickerson and a walk to Russo, the Braves went to the bullpen bringing in Jaye Chapman to face Joseph. Joseph ripped a double to center field scoring Dickerson from second base and extending the Yankees lead to 3-0.
Adam Warren cruised through his 6.0 innings of work for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, at one point retiring 12 consecutive Gwinnett batters. The Braves did not have a base runner make it past second base in the six innings Warren was on the hill. The right hander allowed just three hits and struck out five on the game without allowing a walk.
Gwinnett picked up two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off new Yankees pitcher Manny Delcarmen picking up back-to- back two out hits with a double to right from Jose Yepez producing the pair of runs cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Braves picked up the tying run in the eighth inning off Justin Thomas and nearly took the lead. Jose Constanza ripped a single to right on the first pitch Thomas threw and then went first to third when a pickoff throw from Thomas was missed by Antonelli at first base. Luis Durango tied the game at 3-3 with a single to right. With one down in the inning, Thomas was replaced by Ryota Igarashi (WP, 2-2) who walked to the first two batters he faced to load the bases with one down before striking out Josh Wilson and Ruben Gotay to end the inning.
With two out and the bases empty in the top of the ninth inning, Joseph launched a solo homer to right field off Gwinnett reliever Andy Russell (LP, 0-1) who opened the inning on the mound for the Braves replacing Chapman. Joseph's sixth homer of the season gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Igarashi retired the first two hitters of the inning before issuing a two out walk to Constanza. With the tying run on first base and two down, the Yankees reliever struck out Durango to end the game and preserve the 4-3 win.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will go for the season sweep of Gwinnett in the final game of the four game series scheduled for 7:05 PM on Monday night at Cool Ray Field. Left hander Mike O'Connor (2-3, 3.39) getting the start for the Yankees. Right hander Eric Junge (5-8, 4.62) is slated to make the start for the Braves.
