SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs announced on Friday that they have signed forward Hendrik De Klerk to a WHL Standard Player Agreement. De Klerk was the Chiefs' seventh round (138th overall) pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

"Hendrik took some huge steps this season with the Legionnaires and is an exciting prospect for our organization," said Chiefs' general manager Scott Carter. "We'd like to officially welcome him to the Chiefs and wish him the best of luck in the SMHL playoffs."

De Klerk, a 2002-born defenseman from Swift Current, Sask., played 44 games as a rookie for the Swift Current Legionnaires of the SMHL this season, leading the team's rearguards with 37 points (6G-31A). He recorded 10 multi-point games, highlighted by two three-assist games and a seven-game point streak.

He is the fifth prospect from the Chiefs' 2017 bantam draft class to sign a WHL agreement, joining current Chiefs Jack Finley and Erik Atchison, goaltending prospect Campbell Arnold and Legionnaires teammate Reed Jacobson. De Klerk and Jacobson are set to begin their 2019 SMHL Playoffs schedule on Saturday as Swift Current takes on the Notre Dame Hounds.
