Spokane Chiefs News Release

Rookie goaltender Alex Wright stopped 16 shots and three different players scored goals as the Spokane Chiefs earned their first win of the pre-season, a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon. The game was the third in as many days for the Chiefs at the Everett Silvertips annual pre-season tournament and Spokane finished with a 1-2 record. The Chiefs will play two more pre-season games next week as they prepare for the opening of the regular season on September 18th in Prince George.

Brady Brassart, a second round pick of the Chiefs in 2008, scored his first goal of the pre-season while the Chiefs were on the power play at 11:56 of the first. Stefan Ulmer and Brenden Kichton assisted. Kenton Miller tallied his second in three games at 14:02 of the first and Mitch Wahl scored the game's final goal at 17:09 of the second. Mike Reddington had an assist on Miller's goal while Matt Marantz, who finished the weekend with two goals and an assist, and Ulmer assisted on Wahl's goal.

Wright faced just four shots in the first and third and eight in the second period on his way to the shutout. The Prince George, BC native was acquired by the Chiefs at the start of the 2008-09 season and spent three weeks with the Chiefs last winter while starting goaltender Dustin Tokarski was away at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Wright appeared in one game, stopping five shots in 14 minutes of work.

Spokane was 1-5 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill and outshot the Thunderbirds 31-16.

The Chiefs will take Monday off before practicing Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:00 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. Thursday, they will travel to Kennewick, WA to play in the Tri-City Americans pre-season tournament. Spokane will face Everett on Thursday and then the Americans on Saturday. Both games begin at 7:00.
