Chiefs Fall 4-2 Saturday Night

Peoria, IL - In front of a sell-out crowd of 7,082, the Peoria Chiefs fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits Saturday evening by the score of 4-2 at Peoria Chiefs Stadium. The loss puts Peoria at 0-2 on the half, 35-36 overall as they head into the final game of the three-game series Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 2:00.

Quad Cities wasted no time jumping on Gerardo Concepcion in the top of the first. After two quick outs, Colin Walsh added his Midwest League leading 58th RBI with a mammoth homerun to left giving the River Bandits an early 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs didn't trail for long. Zeke DeVoss led off with an infield single to start the bottom of the first before advancing to second on a Pin-Chieh Chen groundout. Dustin Geiger moved DeVoss to third with a fly out to right. Hector Hernandez bounced his first pitch to Paul Hoilman as it rolled to the backstop allowing DeVoss to trot home tying the game at 1-1.

The River Bandits regained their lead in the top of the fourth. Juan Castillo singled to start the frame before Luis Mateo and Virgil Hill went down swinging. With two outs, Roberto De La Cruz kept the inning alive with single to center. Neal Pritchard made it 2-1 with a single to center scoring Castillo and moving De La Cruz to third. With Matt Williams up, a Concepcion wild pitch allowed De La Cruz to score easily extending Quad Cities lead to 3-1.

The Chiefs cut into the River Bandits lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Chen was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a walk by Geiger. With two on, Hoilman singled to left scoring Chen and cutting the deficit to 3-2. Wes Darvill reached on a fielders' choice with Hoilman out at second and Geiger moving to third. Robert Struck relieved Hernandez and stranded the tying run at third as Javier Baez lined out to center.

The River Bandits added insurance in the top of the eighth with an unearned run against Austin Reed. Walsh walked to start the inning, and advanced to second on a groundout by Anthony Garcia. After Castillo struck out, Walsh scored from second on an error by DeVoss extending Quad Cities lead to 4-2. The Chiefs did not have a base runner in the final two innings against the Bandits bullpen.

Concepcion (2-5) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three. Sheldon McDonald pitched in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, hitting one batter while striking out two. Reed pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk, while striking out three.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Paul Hoilman (1B) - The first baseman finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk in the loss Saturday evening. The RBI was his team-leading 48th of the season, and he's now hitting .275 heading into the series finale on Sunday.
