West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps could not find a way to break through on Saturday night, going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position during a 4-2 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (1-1, 37-35) put at least one runner aboard in every inning and collected eight hits, but left 10 men on base and stranded eight runners in scoring position. They will take on South Bend (1-1, 36-36) in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The Silver Hawks broke up a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. After three straight singles loaded the bases with nobody out, Ryan Court and Marc Bourgeois contributed back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the visitors a 4-2 lead.

The 'Caps were held in check by the Silver Hawks' relief corps, managing just two singles the rest of the way. Three South Bend Relievers combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings, highlighted by Jake Barrett's first professional save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Silver Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, taking a 2-0 advantage on consecutive run-scoring hits by Matt Helm and Court with two outs.

West Michigan chipped away and eventually tied the score.

Luis Castillo led off the first inning with a solo homer and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth, temporarily making it a 2-2 game before South Bend recaptured the lead in the sixth.

J.R. Bradley (4-4) earned the win for the Silver Hawks, allowing six hits - four of which went for extra bases - over 5.1 innings but limiting the Whitecaps to just two runs.

Kyle Ryan (4-3) was charged with four runs on six hits over six innings in the loss. The lefty allowed two runs on three hits in both the first and sixth innings, but retired 13 of the 14 batters that he faced in between.

The Whitecaps continue a six-game homestand at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon with the final game of a three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks. RHP Tommy Collier (5-5, 2.55) is scheduled to take the hill for West Michigan against LHP John Pedrotty (3-5, 6.13) of South Bend. In addition to a Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Day, the Whitecaps will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off for Autism Awareness Day. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
