Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (34-37, 2-0) scored five runs between the seventh and eighth inning to earn an 8-to-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (44-27, 0-2). A bases clearing double by Eliezer Mesa helped the Bees reclaim the lead in the seventh and eventually win their fourth consecutive win.
The win marks the longest winning streak the Bees have enjoyed this season. The Bees had won three consecutive games twice this year, but still seek their first series-sweep over an opponent.
The offensive outburst came a day after the Bees outlasted the Timber Rattlers in a pitchers' duel on Friday night. Bees' starter Seth Frankoff needed the support; the right-hander struggled towards the end of his sixth start of the season.
Frankoff (1-5) pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four runs in the top of the fifth before the Bees' skipper removed him from the game. Frankoff pitched three scoreless innings, but eventually allowed five earned runs on six hits between the fourth and fifth.
The right-hander relinquished the Bees' 3-to-0 lead that Douglas Landaeta provided with a three-run home run in the first. With Wisconsin leading 5-to-3 after five innings, the Bees needed more than Landaeta's team-leading eighth home run to win.
Fortunately the Bees received a great effort with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The two-out rally started when Nick Rickles dropped a single into right and continued after Sean Jamieson grounded a ball past Wisconsin's starter, Drew Gagnon.
The Timber Rattlers turned to lefty, Stephen Peterson to retire the left-handed hitting Chih-Fang Pan who was hitting just .158 against southpaws before the game. But Pan reached on an infield single to the short stop, which loaded the bases for Eliezer Mesa.
Mesa came into the game hitting .350 with runners in scoring position and two outs, and almost immediately smacked a bases-clearing double off the right field wall. The Bees led 6-to-5 after seven innings and scored twice in eighth thanks to an RBI double by Wade Kirkland, and an RBI single from Rickles.
Pan went 3-for-4 with two runs and Mesa went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to help the Bees' cause. The defense was perfect for the fifth consecutive game, and the bullpen pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief. Drew Tyson (1-0) earned his first win and Jonathan Joseph earned his third save.
The Bees try to earn their first series-sweep in game three, which starts at 2 p.m. Fans can also enjoy Little League Ap- preciation Day at Community Field. All kids and coaches can get in free if they don their uniforms, and can participate in a pre-game parade. For information on Bees baseball call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
