Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A very late rally fell short, as the Kernels offense remained cold in a 1-0 loss to Beloit on Saturday in front of 5,278 fans at Perfect Game Field. Beloit pitching shut out the Cedar Rapids offense for the second straight night, while they neutralized a fantastic home pitching performance.
Austin Wood (3-6) had a stellar outing in his first start of the second half. The right-hander struck out three while allowing five hits despite taking the loss. Wood also had the help of three double plays, all turned conventionally in the infield in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.
The Snappers only run came in the 3rd inning. Tyler Grimes scored with 2 outs in the inning from second base on a well-hit double to left field by J.D. Williams.
The two Kernels relievers picked up where Wood's performance left off. Joe Melioris pitched the 7th and 8th innings and allowed a mere two hits while striking out two hitters. The Angels top 2012 draft pick R.J. Alvarez tossed in the 9th to keep the score at the 1-0 clip, notching his fifth and sixth strikeouts of the season in his fourth appearance.
The home team's offense was stagnant until there were no outs to spare in the bottom of the 9th inning. Frazier Hall hit a two-out single on a 2-2 pitch to extend the game before Gary Mitchell swung at the first pitch of his at bat. Mitchell drove the baseball up the middle for a single that moved Hall to third. But after a Beloit pitching change to closer Corey Williams, Zach Borenstein grounded out to second base to end the game.
Tim Shibuya (3-4) picked up the win, going six innings for Beloit. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out one and walking one.
