Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the second game of their four game series with the Louisville Bats 3-2 Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the loss, the Chiefs drop to 2-4 on the homestand.

Louisville (27-33) tallied their first run of the game in the second inning. After Chris Burke flied out to centerfielder Justin Maxwell for the second out of the inning, Chris Valaika smacked a double to center to extend the inning. Next, Chris Denove drew a walk and pitcher Matt Maloney hit a bloop single, loading the bases for leftfielder Drew Sutton. Third baseman Leonard Davis snagged Sutton's grounder down the left field line but he couldn't get it out of his glove in time to make a throw, allowing Valaika to score from third.

The Bats tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Sutton led off the inning with a single. Shortstop Zack Cozart followed with a double down the left-field line, putting two men aboard for Yonder Alonso with no outs. The first baseman powered a long fly ball to center. Maxwell caught the ball on the warning track in centerf, but it was deep enough for Sutton to tag up and score from third. Third baseman Todd Frazier's gapper to right center scored Cozart, extending Louisville's lead to three.

Syracuse (34-25) came closer with a couple of runs in the eighth inning. With runners on the corners, leftfielder Boomer Whiting whipped a single to right, allowing Devin Ivany to come home from third. Syracuse's other run came on a Kevin Mench line drive to center. Chase Lambin raced home from second on the play to make it a 3-2 game.

Matt Maloney tossed 7 1/3 innings in his fifth win of the year for the Bats. He allowed five hits and a pair of unearned runs while striking out six.

Matt Chico falls to 1-2 on the year with Wednesday night's loss. He gave up eight hits in three runs in his five innings of work. Chico struck out four and walked two.

Syracuse and Louisville will square off again Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Chiefs righthander Jeff Mandel (2-1, 2.63) goes to the hill against Louisville's Matt Klinker (1-1, 4.50). First pitch will be at 7:00.
