Chiefs End 2023 with One-Run Loss to Beloit

Peoria, IL - The Chiefs end the regular season losers of four straight, falling 6-5 to Beloit Sunday at Dozer Park.

Andrew Fernandez hit his first High-A home run in the top of the eighth off Gustavo Rodriguez to put Beloit ahead 6-5.

Peoria got on the board first in the home half of the first inning. Alex Iadisernia homered off starter Alex Williams to make it 1-0.

Beloit responded with four runs in the second inning off Edgar Manzo. The Sky Carp loaded the bases for Osiris Johnson, who plated two with an RBI single. Javier Sanoja followed by squeaking a grounder through the middle which scored two runs and made it 4-1.

Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBI finishing the series with nine RBI.

The Chiefs answered with two runs in the home half of the second. Kade Kretzschmar singled which led to a Jeremy Rivas two-run home run. The homer was the third of the season for Rivas and his first in 227 at bats.

The home run made it 4-3. The Chiefs tied the game at four in the third inning against Williams. Iadisernia drew a walk and then scored on a Chris Rotondo double.

Williams left after an apparent injury, finishing two innings allowing four runs on five hits and walking one.

Manzo was finished after three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking one and punching out two.

Dionys Rodriguez pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Manzo, allowing Peoria to take the lead in the sixth inning against reliever Yeuris Jimenez. Thomas Francisco came in to pinch hit with one out and singled. Darlin Moquete and Rivas followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Luis Rodriguez grounded out to shortstop which plated a run to give Peoria a 5-4 lead.

Beloit quickly tied the contest in the top of the seventh. Yiddi Cappe led off with a double. After a groundout, Ryan Ignoffo brought Cappe home to knot the game at five.

G. Rodriguez gave up the tying and go-ahead runs, taking the loss. The win went to Zach King who worked two scoreless innings in relief. Tyler Eckberg recorded the save pitching a scoreless ninth.

Rivas, Moquete, and Rotondo each recorded two hits. The Chiefs had 10 hits but were out-hit 14-10.

Peoria falls to 69-63 and 36-30 in the second half. Beloit improves to 56-75 and 28-37 in the latter half.

After an off day on Monday, the Chiefs begin the postseason against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Game one of the best-of-three Midwest League West Division Championship Series begins Tuesday at Dozer Park with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.
