Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, earned a 7-4 win over the Rochester Red Wings in the series finale Sunday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the win, Syracuse clinched its first series victory since its two-game sweep of Lehigh Valley back on July 1st and 2nd.
The Red Wings (41-75) went ahead with three runs in the first against Chiefs starter Matt Chico. Rochester sent eight batters to the plate in the frame. Chico did not retire a batter until Matt Macri, the Red Wings' sixth hitter of the inning, flied out to right. Brandon Roberts, Brian Dinkelman, D'Angelo Jimenez and Dustin Martin all collected hits in the inning for Rochester.
The Chiefs (59-56) put together a four-run second inning to erase the deficit. With one out and one on, Danny Espinosa clubbed a long homer to right, cutting Rochester's lead to one. The two-run shot was Espinosa's second of the series. Later in the inning, Leonard Davis battered a towering two-run homer over the center field wall to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead. Davis now leads the team with 13 home runs.
Syracuse extended its lead to two with a pair of hits in the third. Left fielder Brian Bixler belted a triple to center for his first hit in a Chiefs uniform to lead off the inning. Jason Botts connected on a double down the left field line in the next at bat, scoring Bixler easily from third.
Red Wings shortstop Toby Gardenhire conked a solo homer to left to make it 5-4 in the fourth. The home run was Gardenhire's first of the year.
Syracuse grabbed a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth to go up 7-4. Both runs came across on Pete Orr's bloop single to center with one out.
Chico won for the sixth time, going 5 1/3 innings. He surrendered four runs and eight hits. The lefthander finished the night with a walk and two strikeouts.
Syracuse reliever Josh Wilkie pitched the last two innings for his sixth save.
Rochester righthander Jeff Manship was given the loss. He gave up five runs and eight hits in his four innings of work. He walked one and struck out five.
The Chiefs begin a four game set with the IL West-leading Columbus Clippers Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. This will be Columbus's only trip to Syracuse this season. Andrew Kown (1-2, 2.52) will make his first start with Syracuse since May 13th. Columbus has not announced their starter for Monday night's game yet. First pitch will be at 7:00.
