Geneva, IL - The Peoria Chiefs led by three after a half inning but eventually fell to the Kane County Cougars 5-4 on Monday night. The loss puts the Chiefs four games out of first place and two out of the Wild Card race with 14 games left in the half.

For the second time in three games the Chiefs plated three runs in the top of the first inning against Kane County. David Macias started the game with a single to left and he went to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single by Josh Harrison. Josh Vitters drove home Macias with a sinking line drive to left that was caught by a diving Franklin Hernandez. Kyler Burke doubled home Harrison for a 2-0 lead and Rebel Ridling reached on an infield single. Nelson Perez gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead with a towering sacrifice fly to the wall in right-center before All-Star Kenny Smalley struck out Junior Lake to end the frame.

Kane County responded with a run of their own off Chiefs starter Marcus Hatley in their half of the first inning. After a groundout, Jason Christian tripled to center field and Dusty Coleman struck out. Steve Kleen put the Cougars on the board with a sharp single down the left-field line as Christian scored.

Smalley recovered and allowed just one hit over the next two innings and the Cougars pounced on Hatley in the bottom of the third inning. Carlos Arrieche started the third with a single to center and with one out Christian laid down a perfect bunt single. Kleen tied the game with a two-run double to the left-field wall as Arrieche and Christian scored easily. Grant Desme gave Kane County their first lead of the game with double to right before Hatley got out of the inning.

Hatley hit one and walked one to start the fifth inning before being replaced by Chris Siegfried. The Chiefs lefty struck out Desme before a double steal and intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. Siegfried responded by striking out Petey Paramore and getting Hernandez to bounce into a fielders' choice to end the frame.

Trailing by one in the seventh the Chiefs put the tying run on base against reliever Jamie Richmond. With one down Ryan Flaherty doubled to left for his third extra-base hit of the series. Flaherty moved to third on a groundout by Brenly but Macias bounced out to short to end the threat.

Kane County added an insurance run against reliever Manolin DeLeon in the seventh. Kleen, who drove in the first three runs, slammed a solo homer to left-center for a 5-3 Cougars lead. In the eighth the Chiefs brought one back and had a chance to tie against reliever Justin Murray. Harrison tripled off the right-field wall to start the inning but Murray got Vitters to pop out and then struck out Burke looking. Ridling got the Chiefs within a run with a single up the middle to score Harrison. Drew Rundle ran for Ridling and stole second to get into scoring position. Murray got out of the jam by striking out Perez to keep the Cougars up 5-4. Hatley (4-4) takes the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over four innings. He walked two, struck out two and hit one. Siegfried threw two shutout innings and struck out a season-high five. Deleon allowed a run on one hit and a walk while striking two in two innings.
