Spokane Chiefs News Release

On Saturday, February 17th, the Chiefs are turning back the clock in more ways than one. When they hit the ice at 8:30 for their match-up against the Kootenay Ice, the Chiefs will be donning "Turn Back the Clock" Spokane Flyer jerseys from 1980 Allan Cup Champions. Fans can sign up at the Miller displays between now and February 13th for their chance to win one of the game worn sweaters.

The special 8:30 start will be the second half of a basketball-hockey double header in the Arena. Gonzaga will host Memphis in an NCAA basketball game at 3:00.

The Chiefs are honoring the fourth senior amateur title won by a Spokane team in 11 seasons. The Jets won their first Allan Cup in 1970 and their second in '72. The Flyers won in '76 and helped cement a hockey dynasty in '80.

In 1980, the Flyers won 35 games in 55 games and would end up winning their last four playoff series by sweeps, winning 13 in a row to bring home the Allan Cup. The team featured five of the top 10 scorers in the WIHL, and the two goaltenders, Ron Lefebvre and Frank Turnbull, were one-two in the league in goaltending. The team also featured Bruce Hamilton, the Governor and General Manager of the Kelowna Rockets. In 43 games, Hamilton scored 30 goals and 73 points.

Along with the Turn Back the Clock Jerseys, the Flyers will be recognized at center ice in a pre-game ceremony.

Tickets for all Chiefs home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
