Chiefs Acquire Kelner from Calgary

January 10, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

The Spokane Chiefs have acquired 18-year-old Curtis Kelner from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for 19- year-old defenseman Dan Mercer. Kelner, a Peoria, Ariz. native is in his second season in the WHL and has appeared in 27 games this year.

"With the recent acquisition of Stephane Lenoski, our older and experienced defensemen, Evan Haw, Sean Zimmerman and Stephane, will be playing a lot of minutes. Our d-corps rounds out nicely with Justin Falk, Jared Spurgeon, Mike Reddington and Curtis Kelner," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said. "Calgary will be a good opportunity for Dan."

"Curtis is a versatile player who can either play on the wing or defense and will fit in our mix both this year and next year," Head Coach Bill Peters said. "With our depth the way it is this trade makes sense short term and long term. We wish Dan the best in Calgary and thank him for his efforts here in Spokane."

The move comes before the WHL's 2:00 trade deadline and gives the Chiefs 24 players; two goaltenders, seven defenseman and 15 forwards.

Tonight, the Chiefs will host the Kamloops Blazers at 7:00 on TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a collector's edition magnet with an action shot of one of your favorite Chiefs.

The game will be the first of three on the week for Spokane as Spokane hosts Chilliwack on Friday and Tri-City on Saturday.

Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
