Chicago Sky Waive Chen Nan, Resign Mistie Bass

CHICAGO, August 21, 2009 - The Chicago Sky waived center Chen Nan and resigned forward Mistie Bass announced General Manager and Head Coach Steven Key.
During recent games and practice Nan suffered from discomfort in her back, after examination from the medical staff it was discovered that her waist and back were both reinjured. Due to the strenuous and physical nature of the game, and for the sake of Nan's professional basketball career, Nan and the team will follow professional advice and immediately stop WNBA play and training.
Nan, a WNBA rookie, averaged 12.3 minutes per game, 3.7 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game through her first 26 games in the WNBA. Nan will remain in Chicago to undertake a thorough 3-4 weeks curing and rehab program in hopes of returning stronger to international competition with the Chinese National Team in the early fall.
As the Sky continues their run for playoff contingency, the team had to release Nan to make room for the necessary replacement, as the WNBA roster only allows 11 players per team. The Sky resigned Mistie Bass, who appeared in all three of the Sky's 2009 preseason games, averaging 4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Bass played for three seasons with the Houston Comets averaging 2.9 points per game in her career and 2.2 rebounds per game. In 2008, the 6-3 forward appeared in a career-best 32 games and averaged 11.4 minutes per game and shot .505 percent from the field.
The Sky picked up Bass, a Duke graduate, in the Houston Comets dispersal draft leading into the 2009 season and then released her after training camp. Bass is currently in Chicago and has begun practicing with the team, she will suit up for the Sky's next game on Saturday August 22 against the Detroit Shock at 7:00pm at the UIC Pavilion.

The Sky is one of six independently-owned teams in the WNBA, the world's longest-running women's professional sports league. Chicago is currently fifth in the WNBA Eastern Conference with a 13-13 record. The Sky's Sylvia Fowles is currently second in the league at 8.6 rebounds per game. Forward Candice Dupree is 13th in the league in scoring at 15.1 points per game and guard Jia Perkins is 15th at 14.5. The Sky plays at the Chicago's UIC Pavilion.
