Chicago Sky Center Sylvia Fowles Receives WNBA Cares Community Assist Award for June

NEW YORK, July 22, 2008 - In recognition of Chicago Sky center and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team member Sylvia Fowles' commitment to the community, the WNBA today honored her with its Community Assist Award for June. In her short time with the WNBA, Fowles has taken an active role in the team's community outreach initiatives and is involved in organizations that support youth development, health and wellness and athletics.

Throughout the month of June, Fowles participated in numerous community events, including the tip-off of Chicago's new "Make a Splash" program. The program is being instituted this summer throughout all public pools in the Chicago Park District to teach water safety to children. Fowles joined Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to introduce the new program where she emphasized the importance of water safety and spoke about her own passion for swimming, citing examples from her experience as a swimming instructor.

"It feels great to have my work in the community recognized," Fowles said. "I love reaching out to kids and although making a difference in the lives of others is rewarding in and of itself, my hope is that this award encourages others to do the same."

Fowles also took part in Chicago's Banner Day Camp in late June. She spoke to the young campers and shared the powerful impact that positive role models, dedication and teamwork have had on her life both on and off of the court.

A strong believer in the positive influence of sports on youth, Fowles is also involved with the Special Olympics, committing time year-round to working with athletes with intellectual disabilities and impressing upon them the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork and having fun.

The WNBA Community Assist Award is presented monthly to the player who best reflects the league's passion for making a difference in the community. In recognition of the recipient's charitable efforts, the WNBA is donating $5,000 to the organization of her choice.
