Chicago Stars FC News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Red Stars midfielder, Jill Aguilera, has been called up to represent Puerto Rico in their upcoming CONCACAF W Gold Cup qualifying match against Mexico September 22.
Aguilera will join El Huracán Azul for the fourth time since her first call up, just one year ago in 2022. The midfielder scored her first goal for Puerto Rico in the 66th minute of her international debut April 8, 2022. Aguilera has recorded two goals and three starts across five appearances for Puerto Rico, captaining the squad for the first time in a friendly against Mexico in April 2023.
In only her second professional season, Aguilera has recorded 35 appearances and seven starts across all National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) competitions. The California native's rookie campaign with Chicago saw her accumulate five starts and a 70.6 percent passing accuracy throughout 17 regular season matches. Aguilera has earned two starts and played 350 minutes in 14 matches for the Red Stars in 2023, averaging a 63.3 percent passing accuracy in regular season play and a 71.4 percent passing accuracy throughout the NWSL UKG Challenge Cup.
Puerto Rico meets with Mexico Friday, September 22 for the team's first CONCACAF Road to W Gold Cup group stage match. The fixture is a rematch of Puerto Rico's first 2023 Central American and Carribean Games group stage game June 29, which Mexico won 0-4. The 2023 CONCACAF "Road to W Gold Cup" tournament is a qualifying tournament taking place September 20 to December 5. Ten teams from the Road to W Gold Cup competition will go on to participate in the inaugural 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup set to take place February 17 to March 10, 2024.
Aguilera is the fifth Red Star selected to represent their country during the September FIFA international window, joining goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher (United States), defenders, Tierna Davidson (United States) and Casey Krueger (United States), and forward, Cheyna Matthews (Jamaica).
