Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, Ill. - The Chicago Red Stars announced plans for two quarterfinals watch parties this weekend. One for the U.S. Women's National Team's game against China on Friday evening, and the other for the Canadian Women's National Team's game against England on Saturday. The Red Stars will host the parties at AJ Hudson's Public House in downtown Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.
Friday's watch party for the U.S. game will feature Red Stars player appearances and exciting giveaways and contest prizes, such as tickets, merchandise, and items signed by World Cup players. Saturday's Canadian National Team event will have giveaways and prizes as well.
Chicago defender Julie Johnston, defender-midfielder Lori Chalupny, midfielder Shannon Boxx and forward Christen Press are all part of the American roster that will compete against China on Friday evening.
Press scored the game winner and her first World Cup goal in the team's opening game of the group stage. Johnston has continued her breakout performance in the tournament after being named FIFA Player of the Match for her exceptional performance in the United States' last group game against Nigeria. She was also voted NWSL Women's World Cup Player of Group Stage for matches two and three.
Meanwhile Red Stars forward Melissa Tancredi, midfielder Adriana Leon and goal keeper Karina LeBlanc will suit up for Canada as part of the squad that will face England on Saturday night.
Leon, a World Cup rookie, was subbed on in Canada's first game of the tournament. The midfielder drew a foul at the top of the box in stoppage time, providing Christine Sinclair with the penalty kick that proved to be the lone goal of the game. Tancredi started in two of Canada's group stage games as well as their round of 16 game against Switzerland.
The Red Stars official social media hashtag for the World Cup is #CRSWWC for posts relating to any of their players competing in the World Cup. All Chicago fans planning to be in Canada during the World Cup are encouraged to take pictures of themselves in their Red Stars gear and to tag @chicagoredstars and use the hashtag #CRSWWC when sharing on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram for a chance to win awesome prizes throughout the tournament.
