Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Roanoke, VA - Sunday, November 2, 2003) - The Charlotte Checkers closed out their busy week of four games in five days and three straight Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to the Roanoke Express in Virginia. Dan Carlson and Dan Carney scored goals for Roanoke while the Checkers, despite seven power play attempts, could not find the net.

Express goalie David Belitski made 28 saves to earn the shutout, while Checkers goalie Scott Meyer was the hard-luck loser with 36 saves. The Checkers dressed only 16 players as defenseman Dan Preston and Patrick Aufiero, along with center Allan Egeland, missed the game. Jeff State, Brandon Cullen and Konrad McKay were already on injured reserve, bringing the number of Checkers players out with injuries to six.

"It was a long week with a lot of games and we just ran out of gas today," commented Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "As usual our goaltending was solid. Scott (Meyer) played great but as a team we didn't have much left after the midway point in the game."

Charlotte came out strong and held its own against the Express as the two teams skated to a scoreless first period. At the 11:05 mark of the second period Roanoke finally broke the ice as Carlson tipped in a shot from the left wing boards by Steve Burgess for a 1-0 lead, which held to the end of the period. After a Ryan Cuthbert penalty, the Express gained some cushion with 10:25 left in the contest as Carney deflected in a Kevin Bergin shot from the point on a power play for a 2-0 Roanoke lead. The Checkers power play, ranked 22nd in the 31-team ECHL entering the game, drew blanks on seven tries.

The win improved Roanoke's record to 4-4-0 for eight points, while the Checkers fell to 2-3-2 for six points. Charlotte returns home to Cricket Arena next Friday night to host the Greensboro Generals at 7:30 p.m.
