Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Charlotte, NC - Saturday, November 1, 2003) - The Charlotte Checkers dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Columbia Inferno Saturday night in Columbia, South Carolina. The Inferno scored a pair of goals in the third period to tie the game, and then won it in overtime on a Jesse Schultz tally with a minute to go in the sudden death session. Charlotte also lost two players in the contest, as defenseman Dan Preston went down in the first period, and Allan Egeland was injured early in the third period. Neither player returned and early indications are they both may be out a while. The Checkers through three road games are 2-0-1, and have yet to lose away from home in regulation.

"We played much better than we did last night, and I'm real proud of the way we battled tonight," quoted Checkers Head Coach, Don MacAdam. "We played short tonight and lost two players during the game while playing a quality team in a tough building. I'm glad to get a point."

The Inferno grabbed a 1-0 lead just 1:59 into the game on Terry Harrison's third goal of the season. The Checkers tied the game late in the period at 1-1 as Doug MacIver's screen shot eluded Columbia's starting goalie Rob McVicar. In the second period Charlotte outscored the Inferno 2-0 to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Rookie Lucas Lawson took a feed from Egeland, zoomed around an Inferno defenseman, drew McVicar out of the net and then backhanded in his second goal of the season for a 2-1 Checker! s lead at 7:31. Charlotte got a power-play goal from rookie Rory Rawlyk to make it 3-1 at 11:29. Columbia Head Coach Scott White then pulled McVicar in favor of Josh Blackburn. Charlotte outshot Columbia 13-11 in the second period.

In the third period Barrie Moore beat a Checkers defenseman and rifled a shot top shelf by Charlotte goalie David St. Germain at 4:55 to cut the lead to 3-2. Paul Cabana tied the game at 3-3 for Columbia at 8:31 of the final period, setting the stage for Schultz's winning goal in overtime.

The Checkers evened their record at 2-2-2 for six points, while the Inferno improved to 5-2-1 for 11 points. Charlotte will close out a busy week of hockey, which includes four games in five days and three straight, when they'll travel to Roanoke Sunday afternoon to meet the Express at 4:00 p.m. Sunday's game can be accessed through the Internet and on the telephone through TEAMLINE.
