Checkers Continue Community Outreach In February

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers have been busy on the ice this season but in February, the team will be just as busy off the ice. Players, coaches and front office staff will make their presence felt in the Charlotte community during the entire month.

Through various fundraising events, the Checkers have donated thousands of dollars to various non-profit groups and schools within the Charlotte community. On January 24th Autotrader.com and WSOC 103.7 FM presented this years Race Night. The event raised over $15,000 to benefit Speedway Children's Charities, Hendrick Marrow Foundation, Victory Junction and B.R.A.K.E.S. Additional funds may be made available through the Autotrader.com employee match program which is still in progress. The evening featured a national anthem performance by a Hendrick Marrow donor recipient, ceremonial puck drop by Speedway Children's Charities and Autotrader. Also, local racecar drivers were on hand to lend support of the night. And finally, the Checkers hosted several children and their families from Victory Junction Gang Camp as their guests for the evening.

In this year's "Out for Blood" blood drive with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, the Checkers drive collected 16 pints of blood to save local lives and bring blood donation awareness to Checkers fans. In addition to the blood drive, the Checkers are making the month of March "Blood Donor appreciation Month."

Other events on tap for February include:

Feb. 4: Checkers mascot, Chubby will appear at the Fletcher school and visit with children in the carpool lane.

Feb. 6: Chubby will continue to make the rounds around the city when he appears at the North Belmont Elementary school.

Feb. 8: The Checkers will host their 3rd Annual Pink in the Rink event, with a live jersey auction postgame. Proceeds generated from the auction of the specialty navy and pink jerseys will benefit Carolina Breast Friends, Susan G. Komen and American Cancer Society.

Feb. 13: Chubby will appear at the Winthrop's Mascot Birthday Party to entertain fans.

Feb. 15: The busy month for the Checkers beloved mascot takes him to Discovery Place from 2-3:00 p.m. for the Arts and Science Event.

The Checkers are in their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next Checkers home game will take place on Feb. 5th against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are playing their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $200.
