
Checkers Blank Wild 1-0, Inch Closer in Playoff Race

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Iowa Wild (30-25-6-2, 68 points) were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers (31-27-4-0, 66 points) 1-0 on Tuesday night in front of 3,718 fans at Bojangles Arena. Charlotte goalie Tom McCollum (5-0-0) stopped all 23 Iowa shots for the shutout, as the Checkers pulled within two points of the Wild in the Central Division playoff race. Forward Lucas Wellmark scored the game's only goal, propelling the Checkers to their fifth straight win. Iowa goalie Alex Stalock (19-14-7) suffered the loss despite making 18 saves on 19 shots faced. Iowa remains in Charlotte for a rematch on Wednesday at 6 PM CT.
After a scoreless first period, Charlotte tallied the game's only goal at 11:56 of the middle period with a power-play strike by Lucas Wellmark. The Checkers utilized their second power play of the game, working the puck down low to the goal line for Kris Newbury. He quickly threaded a pass to the slot for Wellmark, who snapped a wrist shot past Alex Stalock for the 1-0 Charlotte lead. Forward Andrew Miller added an assist on Wellmark's 23rd goal of the season, as the Checkers carried a one-goal lead to the second intermission.
After a brief road trip with two games in Charlotte and two in Cleveland, Iowa returns home to play the Rockford IceHogs on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 PM. It is Kids Eat Free night, presented by Goodhue-Nolte Insurance and 96.5 Country. Fans may bring in a Subway receipt to purchase a ticket for only $5. It is also a mug club night.
Iowa welcomes the Chicago Wolves on Friday, March 31 at 7 PM. Race Car night is presented by NAPA Auto Parts and Freedom Tires. The first 1,500 fans to arrive receive a family car decal presented by Star 102.5. It is also $2 Beer night presented by 100.3 The BUS. Collegeville packs are available for purchase at the game, sponsored by KISS FM and Buffalo Wild Wings. The St. Patrick's Day themed specialty jerseys, worn by the Iowa Wild for all three home games in March, are auctioned off at the live postgame jersey auction on Friday, Mar. 31.
