Charlotte Defeats Durham 5-4

CHARLOTTE, NC - Bulls right fielder Miles Mastrobuoni recorded two doubles, reaching base four times, and reliever Kenny Rosenberg fired three perfect frames of relief and struck out seven, however Knights catcher Seby Zavala homered as part of a three-run fourth inning in Charlotte's 5-4 win over Durham on Friday evening at Truist Field.

After the Knights plated single tallies in the first and second frames, Bulls C Rene Pinto dropped an RBI single into left field in the third to cut Durham's deficit to 2-1. Charlotte would answer with their three-run fourth started by Zavala's solo shot go ahead 5-1.

The Bulls in the next inning made it a three-run game courtesy of RF Ryan Boldt's RBI single before making a ninth-inning comeback attempt. 2B Vidal Brujan would come home when DH Esteban Quiroz reached on a force out to make it 5-3, before Quiroz scored on a wild pitch to narrow the margin to one, however Durham was unable to fully erase the deficit.

Knights reliever Lane Ramsey (1.1 IP, R, BB) earned the victory, while Carl Edwards Jr. (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, K) notched the save. Bulls starter Tobias Myers (3.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K) suffered the defeat, with Rosenberg (3.0 IP, 7 K) fanning seven of the nine batters he faced, including each of the first four.

Mastrobuoni (2-2, 2 2B, 2 BB) and Pinto (2-5, RBI) each recorded multi-hit efforts, while 2B Esteban Quiroz reached base three times with a double and two walks. With the loss, the Bulls one win or one loss by the Tacoma Rainiers away from clinching the best record among all 30 Triple-A teams this year. Last night, Durham clinched the Triple-A East regular season title with their 8-6 victory over Charlotte.

The two teams are set to face off again on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:04pm. RHP Brent Honeywell is anticipated to take the mound for Durham, with LHP John Parke expected to start for the Knights.

The Bulls return to Durham for their final homestand of the 2021 campaign on Wednesday, September 22 to start a five-game set versus the Gwinnett Stripers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
