Charleston Routs Kannapolis 15-5

CHARLESTON, SC - All nine starters for the Charleston RiverDogs chimed in on offense in the team's 15-5 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators Saturday night in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 4,451 fans. The RiverDogs (12-10) remain in fourth place in the Southern Division, while the Intimidators (10-13) stay in fifth place in the Northern Division.

Eight of the nine batters recorded a hit for the RiverDogs in Saturday's onslaught. Charleston finished the game with 15 runs on 16 hits, both season highs for the team. Greg Bird turned in a 4-6 night at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI's. Leading the offensive charge along with Bird was catcher Peter O'Brien. O'Brien had missed the previous two games, but came out ripping the ball Saturday. He finished 1-3 at the plate with a monster three-run homer to right centerfield, a run scored and a team high five RBI's.

Taylor Dugas was 1-1, walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Claudio Custodio was a homer shy of the cycle with his 3-4 performance.

Jake Cave went 2-5 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two nice diving catches in right. He has now recorded at least one hit in all five games he has played with Charleston. Also, Reymond Nunez hit his first home run of the year, a mammoth two-run blast over the scoreboard in left in the first inning.

The only RiverDog in the lineup who did not collect a hit was Cito Culver. However, Culver walked twice and scored three times in the game.

Starting pitcher Rafael De Paula (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season. De Paula went five strong innings and gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six. With those six strikeouts, De Paula still leads the SAL with a league high 39 strikeouts on the season.

Following De Paula's departure, Phil Wetherell came in for two innings and gave up three runs on two hits, walked two and struckout two. After Wetherell's day came to a close, Charlie Short came in and shut-down the Kannapolis offense with two scoreless innings to end the ballgame.

Kannapolis was led by their number nine hitter Kale Kiser. He finished the evening going 2-for-4 at the plate with a solo homer and two runs scored.

The starting pitcher for the Intimidators Brendan Brennan struggled out of the gates. He lasted a season worst two-thirds of an inning and gave up six runs on four hits and walked two.

BALLPARK FUN: Charleston tied Asheville for the most runs scored by one team in a single game this season in the South Atlantic League. Around the ballpark the stands were filled with residents from North Charleston on North Charleston Night at The Joe.

COMING UP: The third game of this four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators is Sunday afternoon at 5:05. RHP Gabe Encinas (3-0, 0.39 ERA) will be on the mound for Charleston and he face's RHP Jake Cose (2-2, 3.60 ERA) for the Intimidators.
