Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (12-11) took advantage of four errors committed by the Hickory Crawdads (14-9) on Saturday in the first five innings, cruising to an 8-2 win. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Suns, and evened the four-game series at one win apiece.
The four Crawdads errors led to four unearned runs for the Suns. In the first inning a fielding error by Hickory 3B Joey Gallo allowed Suns DH Tony Renda to reach second to begin the frame. He moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by 3B Mike McQuillan. In the fourth it was CF Will Piwnica-Worms who reached base on an error, this time a fielding error by SS Luis Marte. Piwnica-Worms moved to second on a groundout, and scored when LF Wes Schill doubled to left.
Marte made two more fielding errors in the fifth, which led to the other two unearned runs for the Suns. Up 2-1 going into the frame, Renda reached on the second error of the inning by Marte with one out. Then McQuillan singled to left, putting runners at first and second. Another wild pitch allowed both runners to advance to scoring position, meaning RF Wander Ramos was able to bring Renda home with a sacrifice fly to center field. McQuillan scored when the next batter, 1B Shawn Pleffner, doubled to right.
The Suns added to their lead with two runs in the seventh. Renda, McQuillan, and Ramos hit back-to-back-to-back singles with one out to load the bases. Pleffner then hit a sacrifice fly to right, which allowed Renda to score and McQuillan to move to third. It was another wild pitch that allowed McQuillan to come home from third and make it 6-2 Suns.
Hagerstown put the game away with two more runs in the eighth. Schill began the inning with a single up the middle. Two outs and three batters later, Renda hit a double to center field, driving in Schill from first. Renda scored from second when McQuillan then singled to right. Renda finished the night with three hits and four runs scored.
Both Hickory runs came from solo homeruns. In the top of the first CF Lewis Brinson began the game by smacking his fourth homerun of the year over the left field wall. In the top of the seventh 1B Jorge Alfaro hit his fourth long ball of the season, also to left field. That gives the Crawdads 39 homeruns on the year, most of any team in the South Atlantic League.
Starting LHP Kylin Turnbull (1-0) picked up the win in his 2013 Suns debut. He went six innings, surrendering one run on three hits while striking out seven without walking a batter. Starting RHP Connor Sadzeck (2-1) suffered the loss for Hickory. He pitched five innings, surrendering four unearned runs on five hits while striking out one and walking none.
The Suns and Crawdads continue their four game series at Municipal Stadium on Sunday April 28. Hagerstown will send RHP Ivan Pineyro (0-2) to the mound for his fifth start of the season. He will square off against LHP Sam Stafford (0-2) for the Crawdads. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm.
