Charleston Battery Home Opener Set for March 9
December 14, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Battery will open its 27th season as a professional soccer club against Ottawa Fury FC at MUSC Health Stadium on Saturday, March 9.
The Battery enters the 2019 USL Championship season following its eleventh consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2018. Charleston is the only club to reach the playoffs every season of the league's modern era.
As the staff works towards the home opener on March 9, Head Coach and General Manager, Mike Anhaeuser continues to build his roster for the new season. The Club recently announced the return of twelve players from the 2018 squad including captain Taylor Mueller and all-league selections Ataulla Guerra and Tah Brian Anunga. Anhaeuser has attended multiple combines along the east coast since the announcement. Additional player announcements will be made in the near future.
The Battery will look to continue its strong home form in 2019 after going 20-7-6 at MUSC Health Stadium over the course of the last two seasons. A win against Ottawa on the opening day of the season would be the Battery's first against the Fury at home. Charleston leads the all-time series 1-0-3 with the lone win coming at TD Place Stadium on the final day of the 2018 regular season.
Prior to the home opener, the Battery will welcome the Chicago Fire, FC Cincinnati, and a third MLS club to Charleston for the 15th Carolina Challenge Cup (CCC). The preseason tournament is set to take place on February 16, 20, and 23 with doubleheaders every day.
Single-day tickets, series passes, and group experiences for Carolina Challenge Cup are on sale now as are tickets to the home opener. Visit charlestonbattery.com to purchase.
