
Champions Make Flurry of Moves to Strengthen Roster

Ottawa, ON - The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have made a flurry of moves to strengthen roster in the last few hours. Ottawa acquired OF DERRICK PYLES from the QUÃâ°BEC CAPITALES for future considerations and released OF BRIAN VAN KIRK.
They also signed C NICHOLAS LECOMPTE and released C NIC LOPS. 1B ALEXANDER MALLETA has been placed on the DL. IF JASON COKER has been removed from PYLES, 33, is an LS-4 who is having a career year for the Capitales, batting .375 with two homeruns and nine RBI in 20 games.
The independent league veteran began his career in 2006 with the Golden League's San Diego Surf Dawgs and has since played in the Pecos League, American Association, Atlantic League, United League, and Can-Am League.
VAN KIRK, 30, is an LS-5 who was batting .265 with one homerun and six RBI in 21 games for the Champions.
The former Toronto Blue Jays' prospect had missed the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
A second shot for Lecompte with the Champions
LECOMPTE, 22, had three at-bats in two games for Ottawa in 2015. The Gatineau native has also been the Champions bullpen catcher for the past two seasons.
Following the finale of their three games series with Trois-Rivieres on Thursday, the Champions hit the road for a quick three-game weekend series against the New Jersey Jackals.
LOPS, 23, played for St. Joseph's College of Maine and the Empire League's Watertown Bucks this season before signing with Ottawa.
In five at-bats, the South Portland, ME native had three strikeouts and a run scored.
Champions place Malleta on the DL, Activate Coker
The OTTAWA CHAMPIONS have placed 1B ALEXANDER MALLETA on the disabled list and activated 3B JASON COKER from the disabled list.
MALLETA, 39, is batting .254 with two homeruns and 15 RBI in 20 games for Ottawa in 2016.
The Cuban National was hit on the hand by a pitch during Tuesday's game against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles.
COKER, 27, has played 14 games for the Champions in 2016, compiling a .324 batting average with six RBI.
The former Ottawa Fat Cat has also pitched in four games for the Champions.
The Champions hit the road for a quick three-game weekend series against the New Jersey Jackals before returning home on Tuesday to face the Shikoku Island Japanese All-Stars for three games, following by four games against the Sussex County Miners, highlighted by a Canada Day doubleheader at 1:35 pm on July 1st.
