Ottawa Champions News Release

OTTAWA - After an historical outing on Tuesday that saw one league record broken and another tied, the Ottawa Champions fell flat, losing 10-4 to the Rockland Boulders.

Ottawa was charged with four errors and only one of the ten runs against was earned, making for a frustrating night for starting pitcher Jared Mortensen.

Mortensen struck out six batters, walking three over six innings with six hits against. The team allowed seven runs while he was on the mound but none of them were earned. Matt Valin was charged with the only earned run of the game.

The Boulders scored six runs over three innings, including a home run from Matt Oberste off Matt Valin's second pitch of the game. That made it 8-3 Rockland.

Rockland scored two runs in the second and third innings to make it 4-2 Boulders, but the Champions responded in the bottom of the third. Steve Brown drilled a double off the left field wall that just barely stayed in the park, allowing Eduard Pinto to score and make it 4-3.

Ottawa got on the board early, putting up two runs in the first inning but spent the rest of the game spinning their tires. The first run came off of an error from Boulders catcher Blake Grant-Parks when he tried to pick off Steve Brown at second. The throw bounced before it got to Ryne Birk and went into center field, allowing Malik Collymore to score from third. Brown then scored on the next play when Brian Portelli hit a single to left center.

The Champions have the day off on Thursday before heading to Québec for a three-game series against the Capitales. Then they have another three-games series in Rockland against the Boulders before coming back to RCGT Park for three games against the league-leading Sussex County Miners.
