
Chamique Holdsclaw and Alana Beard Nominated for ESPN ESPY Awards

Washington, D.C. â Washington Mystics players Chamique Holdsclaw and Alana Beard are both nominated for an ESPN ESPY Award. ESPY Awards are given out each year to top performers in the world of sports. Holdsclaw is nominated for Best WNBA Player and Beard is nominated for Best Female College Athlete. Fans can go to ESPN.com and vote for who they feel should take home an award. Polls close on July 9th and the award show will air on July 18th at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN.
Holdsclaw, in her sixth WNBA season, is currently averaging 20.6 ppg and 9.6 rpg with the Mystics. Holdsclaw has won four ESPY's in her career including 1999 Best Female Athlete as well as 1998, 1999 and 2000 Best Female College Basketball Player.
Beard was selected by the Mystics with the second overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft after leading her team at Duke University to the Elite Eight Round of the NCAA Tournament. Beard has received the State Farm Wade Trophy for National Player of the Year and was the first woman to win the John R. Wooden Award for Player of the Year. This is the first ESPY award nomination for Beard who is currently averaging 7.8 ppg and 3.9 rpg with the Mystics.
"To be nominated out of so many athletes is a great honor for me," said Beard. "It is something I accept with great pride."
