Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, opened the flood gates late Monday, washing away the Daytona Cubs 10-5 at McKechnie Field.
Trailing 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, the Marauders got a shot in the arm on a leadoff homerun from Robbie Grossman, his sixth of the season. It was the start of a seven run, 13 batter, three pitcher inning, that saw the Marauders leap ahead 8-4. Grossman's knock was followed by a single from Adalberto Santos, removing starter Jeffry Antigua from the game.
Against recently add reliever Kyle Smit the Marauders exploded. Smith allowed the first four batters he faced aboard with singles by Carlos Paulino, Elevys Gonzalez and David Rubinstein and a walk to Evan Chambers. Jairo Marquez then grounded out to force in a run and make it 5-4, putting the Marauders ahead.
The threat didn't end there. Kelson Brown then grounded into a fielder's choice in which no out was recorded. Third baseman Dustin Harrington came home with a throw to try and snuff out Chambers at the plate. Chambers was ruled safe and the inning rolled on. Smit would eventually be replaced by Juan Serrano after facing ten batters and recording only two outs. Serrano ended the inning with a flyout from Gonzalez. The Marauders led 8-4.
Daytona did start to rally back in the eighth with a run on an RBI single from Greg Rohan, who went 4-4 in his Daytona debut. But the Marauders put it out of reach in the eighth with a two-run homer from Chambers, his second of the game. He had previously homered in the fourth, a solo blast. Chambers has nine homeruns after the night.
The win goes to Ryan Beckman in relief. The loss is Smit's first. The Marauders are not 14-11 in the second half.
NOTES: Bradenton is now 5-0 when Brandon Cumpton pitches and 5-1 at home on Monday nights. The Marauders are 16-4 when wearing their gold caps since the All-Star break. Justin Bour and Michael Burgess also homered for Daytona. Bour's was his 19th, tying him with Jupiter's Kyle Jensen for the Florida State League lead. Evan Chambers did not record an out in the game, reaching in all five plate appearances and belting two homeruns, the second time a Marauder has hit two in one game this year.
The Marauders and Cubs duel again Tuesday at 6pm with a 5:45 radio start time on 1280-AM WTMY. Major League rehabber Ross Ohlendorf will start for Bradenton. For ticketing information visit online at BradentonMarauders.com.
