Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs took a page out of the Lakeland Flying Tigers book, scoring early and often on their way to a 9-1 victory on Monday at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Alex Colome (9-5) was the recipient of eight runs of support over the first two innings, and he made those runs stand up. The Charlotte righty tossed six innings of one-run ball, striking out four men to win his fifth consecutive start.
Following two straight games in which the offense supplied just four hits, Charlotte banged out 13 safeties against five Lakeland pitchers on Monday. Eight of the nine men in the Stone Crabs lineup collected at least one base hit.
Brett Nommensen got the night off from the field, starting instead as the designated hitter. He belted a first inning, two-run homer among his three hits on the night.
The Stone Crabs scored four unearned runs in the first inning, thanks in part to a pair of Flying Tigers errors.
Hak-Ju Lee opened the game by reaching on second baseman Corey Jones' fielding miscue. After Ty Morrison laid down a bunt a single, Tyler Bortnick attempted to execute a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. When Lakeland starter Mark Sorensen could not field Bortnick's bunt cleanly, the bases were loaded for Mike Sheridan.
Sheridan delivered a run-scoring single to bring home Lee with the first of four Charlotte runs in the inning. A ground ball double play off the bat of Mark Thomas allowed Morrison to cross the plate and make it a 2-0 game. Nommensen then picked on a payoff pitch to belt a towering two-run homer that capped the first inning scoring.
Four more runs came in against Sorensen in the second inning. Matt Hall led things off with a single and was brought in when Morrison laced a double to right. Two batters later, a passed ball by Flying Tigers catcher Julio Rodriguez allowed Morrison to score. A run-scoring double by Thomas and an RBI-single by Nommensen rounded out the second inning outburst.
In total, Sorensen (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs - four earned - in just two innings of work. He surrendered nine hits as his recent struggles continued. Sorrensen was demoted from Double-A Erie earlier in the week after a string of unsuccessful outings.
Deivis Mavarez came on to work the final three innings, recording his first save of the season.
The series continues on Tuesday as the Stone Crabs send Merrill Kelly (7-3) to the mound against Flying Tigers lefty Jarred Wesson (10-6). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
