Chacin Slings Tourists Back To First

Charleston, SC - The Tourists and RiverDogs battled for first place at Joseph P.Riley Stadium on Friday night with Asheville (28-14) eking out a 3-1 win. Jhoulys Chacin (6-1) defeated the RiverDogs (27-14) for the second time in as many starts with eight innings pitched. Chacin struck out six and scatter five hits while allowing just one run to put the Tourists back in first place by 1/2 game RiverDogs starting pitcher Dellin Betances held Asheville hitless through six inning and allowed just one unearned run with eight strikeouts in the no decision. The Tourists would not record a hit until Helder Velasquez singled to left field with one out in the seventh.

The game was tied at 1-1 until the eighth inning when Jeffrey Cunningham doubled home Everth Cabrera and Michael Mitchell. Cunningham has 33 RBI on the season, second most in the S.A.L. Asheville scored first in the second inning after Darin Holcomb reached on an error and came around to score on a Brian Lapin groundout. The RiverDogs tied up the game in the third inning with an infield single, walk sacrifice bunt and groundout to plate Carmen Angelini.

The game remained tied until Cunningham delivered his second double in as many games in the eighth inning. The win ended the Tourists longest losing streak of the season at three games. The two teams pick it up tomorrow with Cory Riordan (5-1) on the mound for the Tourists. The game begins at 7:05 and can be heard on WRES FM 100.7 or on the internet at www.theashevilltourists.com The Tourists return home from their road trip on Tuesday May 20th for their first meeting of the year with the Rome Braves at 7:05 p.m. It will be another Kids Eat Free Night, presented by Papa John's Pizza, and the first of three Goodwill Nights at the ballpark. Bring any three new or gently used clothing items to McCormick Field and receive a free general admission ticket for that night's game.
