Villalona Homers in Jackets Loss to Columbus

Columbus, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (23-18) began a four game series against the Columbus Catfish (18-23) with a 3-1 loss Friday night. Angel Villalona had a solo homer in the ninth inning to break-up the shutout and Francisco Peguero was 4-for-4 in the loss.

Columbus took a 3-0 lead into the top of the ninth but Villalona connected for a one-out solo-homer to left field, his fourth of the season, to end the shutout bid by the Catfish.

The Catfish took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double from Greg Sexton scoring Reid Fronk.

Columbus made it 2-0 in the fifth inning when Maiko Loyola scored on an RBI ground out from Fronk.

Augusta starter Daryl Maday (2-3) worked five innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. The right-hander did not walk a batter and struck out five matching his season high.

Steven Calicutt worked the final three innings for Augusta and allowed a single run in the sixth inning on a one-out RBI double from Shawn Williams for a 3-0 Catfish lead.

The GreenJackets and Catfish continue their series Saturday night with Augusta sending right-hander Oliver Odle (2-3, 4.96) to the mound. Columbus counters with right-hander Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.44). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes:

The GreenJackets are 13-6 on the road this season.

Charlie Culberson had his seven game hit streak snapped with an 0-for-4 night.

The GreenJackets had their season high six game road winning streak snapped.

Peguero collected four hits in a game for the first time this season and all four were singles.

Augusta left seven runners on base and six in scoring position.
