CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the week

Published on September 14, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Week

RB – Charles Roberts #1

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Highlights

Roberts possesses shifty, creative running that produced 159 yards and two (2) touchdowns.

Game Notes:

Once again, Roberts combined his quick cut-back abilities and suddenness to take over a game. I was impressed with the way he set up blocks and bounced plays outside or to the other rush lanes.

Roberts accelerated in and out of holes and made people miss tackles in the open field. His big speed and swiftness made him a scary adversary.

1st Runner Up: Anthony Calvillo #13, Montreal Alouettes

2nd Runner Up: Autry Denson #6, Montreal Alouettes

Defensive Player of the Week

LB – A.J. Gass #77

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

Gass demonstrated outstanding linebacker play that showed excellent range and was totally dominant.

Game Notes:

Gass is tough. He played a very active game and was always around the ball.

I was impressed with his feel for the game and how well he played in space. Gass took on blockers and made plays both on the line and in pursuit. Not even collisions with 300 lb. blockers could keep him in check.

1st Runner Up: Lamar McGriggs #36, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: George White #38, Calgary Stampeders

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Lineman of the Week

DE – Tom Canada #44

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Highlights

Canada had powerful, explosive defensive line play that included six (6) tackles and lots of pressure.

Game Notes:

Canada did an outstanding job of recognizing blocking schemes and refused to stay blocked. His timing and anticipation were both excellent.

I felt his play was a textbook example of how the defensive end position should be played to create problems for opponents. I never saw him give less than 100 per cent in any play.

1st Runner Up: Brent Johnson #97, BC Lions

2nd Runner Up: Tim Cheatwood #49, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Special Teams Player of the Week

K – Paul McCallum #4

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Highlights

Reliable kicking and consistency in all areas allowed McCallum to score 18 points.

Game Notes:

McCallum turned in an exceptional performance of pressure kicking. His punts had good hang-time; his kick-offs were high and deep at all times and his powerful leg appeared to be the Riders most reliable offensive weapon. The offence sputtered often and needed McCallum's kicking reliability to put points on the board.

1st Runner Up: Michael Botterill #30, Montreal Alouettes

2nd Runner Up: Winston October #9, Edmonton Eskimos

Judge: Ellison Kelly
