CFL names players of the month
September 2, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
Offensive Player of the Month
QB â Casey Printers #1
BC Lions
Highlights
In the month of August, Printers completed 85 of 133 passes, garnering a pass completion percentage of 64 per cent and 1,530 total yards. He had 13 touchdown passes with only five (5) interceptions. Printers also rushed for 111 yards and two (2) touchdowns.
Game Notes:
In just half a season, Printers has perhaps become the CFL's premier quarterback. He is leading the B.C. Lions to a club record of six straight wins.
Printers has great arm strength and athletic ability. He also has the other intangibles, mental and emotional maturity, smarts, poise and patience. The transition from backup to starter has been outstanding. The B.C. Lions have a franchise-type quarterback in Printers and have to be considered strong contenders for a Grey Cup berth.
1st Runner Up: WR - Geroy Simon #81, BC Lions
2nd Runner Up: RB -Troy Davis #32, Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Judge: Bob Krouse
Defensive Player of the month
LB â John Grace #7
Calgary Stampeders
Highlights
During August, Grace had 13 tackles and one (1) special teams tackle, with four (4) quarterback sacks, two (2) interceptions, 95 yards returned and one (1) touchdown from an interception.
Game Notes:
Grace does it all â plugs holes, pursues pass rushes both inside and outside, drops into coverage and intercepts passes. He utilizes his size, speed and instincts to make âbig plays'. Grace's play provides leadership and motivation to the Stampeders most consistent unit.
Grace is having a banner year!
1st Runner Up: LB - Kevin Johnson #44, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: DB - Joey Boese #23, Calgary Stampeders
Judge: Bob Krouse
Lineman of the month
DE â Eric England #95
Toronto Argonauts
Highlights
In August, England had 15 tackles, one (1) quarterback sack, two (2) tackles for a loss and two (2) forced fumbles.
Game Notes:
England is a super pass rusher; very difficult to block. He has great technique and penetration and is able to disrupt running plays and make tackles at the point of attack.
England is tenacious and exuberant. The quarterbacks are always looking for him, as he forces them to hurry passes or scramble into the arms of his team mates. His steady play resulted in him being selected three times as a player of the week runner-up for August.
1st Runner Up: DE - Anwar Stewart #9, Montreal Alouettes
2nd Runner Up: DE - Tom Canada #41, Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Judge: Bob Krouse
Special Teams Player of the month
KR/WR â Keith Stokes #3
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Highlights
Stokes returned 26 punts for 425 yards and two (2) touchdowns, three (3) missed field goals for 11 yards, and 21 kickoffs for 399 yards, for a total of 835 yards and two (2) touchdowns in the month of August.
Game Notes:
Stokes has the ability to penetrate holes quickly and pop back out just as fast if it closes, causing pursuing tacklers to lose him. It is Stokes' great vision, quickness and balance that allow him to make âbig plays' out of nothing, all by himself. Stokes is a magician with his feet.
1st Runner Up: KR/WR - Winston October #9, Edmonton Eskimos
2nd Runner Up: KR/WR - Ezra Landry #16, Montreal Alouettes
Judge: Bob Krouse
