Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal lost 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night at Stade Saputo, ending a second streak this season of eight consecutive games without a loss.
A single goal late in the first half by midfielder Lewis Morgan (43') was enough for the visitors to claim all three points. The goal snapped a 276-minute shut out for Montreal, dating back to August 13. It was also the first home loss to the Red Bulls since May 19, 2012 at Olympic Stadium.
With six games remaining this season, Montreal remains second in the East with 49 points, two points ahead of the Red Bulls.
The Montrealers will play their next road game against arch-rivals Toronto FC this Sunday at 7:30pm at BMO Field (TVA Sports, TSN, BPM Sports, TSN 690).
GAME NOTES
- Defender Kamal Miller played his 50th game with CF Montréal.
Post-game comments from head coach Wilfried Nancy, Samuel Piette and Victor Wanyama are available here.
WILFRIED NANCY
"Tonight we had the right positions at times, but we lacked technique. Offensively we put something together and we had opportunities, but we couldn't score. We tried to throw New York off balance in a different way tonight. That's why we put together a team that was less offensive but was able to control their counterattacks. After that, it's a question of precision on the technical gestures. When I look at the game, it lacked fluidity in the final third. Those who played did what they had to do, but we faced a good defensive team."
VICTOR WANYAMA
"We knew New York was going to defend a lot and try to hit on the counterattack. Every team that comes here will try to do that. It's unfortunate that we conceded early. We were lacking some cutting edge and finishing in the box. But that happens sometimes and hopefully we can address that quickly. New York's game-plan worked for them tonight."
SAMUEL PIETTE
"New York is a tough team to play against. The team plays with a lot of pressure from the first whistle to the end. We saw that they pulled back a little bit once they took the lead. Sometimes it's more complicated to play against a low block. They are very tenacious. But it's still good preparation for the playoffs. Today was a hard-fought game."
