July 22, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - CF Montréal kicked off the Group Stage of the 2023 Leagues Cup by defeating Pumas UNAM 4-2 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw in regulation, on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Stade Saputo.
The Montrealers took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Bryce Duke (23') and Mathieu Choinière (43'), but a late UNAM comeback with goals from Gabriel Fernández (88') and Emanuel Montejano (90+2') forced a penalty shootout.
All four Montreal shooters were perfect (Camacho, Choinière, Corbo and Lappalainen), while Adrián Aldrete and Jorge Ruvalcaba failed to score for Pumas.
With this penalty shootout win, Montreal earned two points in the East 2 group standings.
CF Montréal will conclude the Group Stage of the Leagues Cup by hosting D.C. United this Wednesday at Stade Saputo at 7:30pm (MLS Season Pass, BPM Sports).
MATCH NOTES
-It was the fourth sold-out match at Stade Saputo in 2023.
Postgame comments from head coach Hernán Losada, Jonathan Sirois et Joel Waterman are available here.
HERNÁN LOSADA
"I have very good impressions of the match, especially the first hour of the game. We played good soccer. It was a real cup match. The fans were very involved. It was a very positive collective performance, which gives us a lot of confidence for what is to come. When you play against clubs from other countries, you know there's always going to be more intensity. We've all witnessed that. I'm very happy for the whole team and all the fans who came out tonight to witness a good match with a lot of emotion. We're happy with the result, but it's up to us to see the game through to the end."
JONATHAN SIROIS
"I think it was my first penalty shootout as a professional, but it was a great experience. I had a lot of fun, especially at home in a packed stadium. I let my instincts lead me during the PKs, but I managed to make the save, so I'm happy. We got carried away by emotions at certain points in the match, and the crowd got into it too."
JOEL WATERMAN
"I thought we had a great first half. They had some dangerous players. We had trouble getting out of our own zone. That is an area we need to improve. They had two scoring chances and converted both. But I wish we had picked up the full three points. But I'm happy the guys came back and did it in penalty kicks. I would have liked to keep the clean sheet but we got the job done."
