New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution dueled the New York Red Bulls to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night at Red Bull Arena in the first match of the Leagues Cup 2023 group stage. The Revolution bring one point home to New England after falling in the shootout, 4-2.
New York nearly broke through for the opening goal moments after the 20-minute mark, as Dante Vanzeir fired a low shot into the waiting hands of Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović. The Serbian stood tall again in the 40th minute with another crucial save from point-blank range, this time denying Frankie Amaya.
Petrović finished the 90 minutes with three saves to preserve his second straight shutout performance and the team's eighth of the year between the regular season and Leagues Cup. He then added one stop in the shootout. Petrović was aided by stalwarts Dave Romney and Andrew Farrell in central defense, and DeJuan Jones back in action at left back for the first time since featuring for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.
New England held a slight edge in possession as the Revolution battled through New York's high press. The visitors managed to produce seven shots on the night to New York's 11. Forward Gustavo Bou registered a shot on target with a long-range effort that was saved in the 69th minute, one of his team-high four attempts on the night.
Midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye, acquired last week in a trade from Toronto FC, earned the start for his Revolution debut. The Canadian international played 90 minutes in his first action with the club.
New England will finish play in the Leagues Cup 2023 group stage on Wednesday, July 26 against LIGA MX side Atlético de San Luis at Gillette Stadium. New York and San Luis will then meet on Matchday 3 of group play on July 30 to decide which of the two teams in the group will advance to the Round of 32 knockout stage. Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena
On the differences in the last two matches vs. New York Red Bulls:
Arena:
"They were somewhat similar. A grind out there. When we play with Red Bull, that's what games
are going to look like. There was going to be a lot of contact. Challenging on the referee. Maybe he was a
little over his head today on some of this.
So, it's a Red Bull game."
On the positives he takes away from the match:
Arena:
"Well, we're still in the competition. We have to win Wednesday. Our mission is clear. We have to
win Wednesday. The other teams don't have to win their second game, so that's a little bit different, for
sure. So, we have to go out and win Wednesday."
On Matt Polster's absence and Mark-Anthony Kaye's performance:
Arena:
"[Mark-Anthony] Kaye played well. No updates on [Matt] Polster."
On Giacomo Vrioni:
Arena:
Well, he [Giaco
mo Vrioni] played about what, 25 minutes in regulation? I don't know exactly, and
then had the penalty. He was okay, had a chance at the end of the game. He did fine. He did fine. I would
have liked to see him make the penalty, but you know, penalties are
not easy."
On what he hopes to correct for Wednesday's match:
Arena:
"Well, you just said it - get some goals, right? We have to play to win, so it's that simple. We have
a point in the competition. Red Bull have two. I don't even know - when did they [Atletico de San Luis]
play over the weekend? They have a weekend off at home, so obviously, based on last year, the way
they set everything up
- obviously, the team with two home fields obviously has an advantage. So, you
know, they [New York] are in good position. We have to go out and play a little bit better on Wednesday
and get three points."
On multiple opportunities for VAR to intervene in the match and if the non-
decisions were "legit":
Arena:
"This was a very confusing game for penalties in my view. Whether anything was 'legit', not legit, I
don't even know. I don't know what they saw in VAR. The one handball called looked like it could have
been. They took so long, I didn't understand why it wasn't given after they looked, but I can't honestly tell
you that I thought it was a penalty ... I didn't see it that clearly. I have no idea what the VAR for the red
card was. I have no clue about that, and I don't know what was the other one they had. You said three. I
remember two. I don't remember the third incident. So, you know, what can I say?"
On his takeaways from tonight's game:
Arena:
"Your takeaway is you're still in a tournament. You know, the idea is to advance out of group play,
so we're still in position to do that. That's what I take away."
On if he expects to rotate the roster on Wednesday:
Arena:
"I can't answer that question now. Our guys have played three games in a week with some
rotation, and I anticipate we'll probably do some, but I can't tell you. We have to wait and see how the
players recover. We have certainly enough time to get guys recovered to play on Wednesday."
On standout players from the match:
Arena:
"Well, it was it was a real battle. I thought [Djordje] PetroviÄÃâ¡ made a real good save in regulation.
When you save a penalty, that's the job of the goalkeeper in a shootout, so we let him down and then
obviously, you give credit to their goalkeeper for stopping one as well. I think the game was a grind-out
game and I thought that Red Bull had a lot of good play out of their entire team. I thought they did a good
job. They want to get after the ball and chase it and battle, and I think they hit the wall a little and the
substitutions they made, I think, helped them to get into the shootout. So, they did a good solid job there. I
thought Carles Gil was good for us. I thought [Mark-Anthony] Kaye and [Ian] Harkes played well in the
midfield. [Gustavo] Bou had a good second half. Our centerbacks did a good job. It was an even match all
the way, not much more I can say about it."
New England Revolution Defender Brandon Bye
On the clean sheet performance:
Bye:
"Defensively, I thought we were okay. We gave up a few chances. Obviously, Djordje [Petrovic]
made up some big saves, but a little disappointing to not get the win."
On Mark-Anthony Kaye making his Revolution debut:
Bye:
"Awesome. A very good player who we saw a lot in practice this week. He came to play this
weekend, so it was good."
On how the team will prepare for Atletico de San Luis on Wednesday:
Bye:
"Yeah, scouting them, understanding who they are and how they've played in their last few games.
It's really about us trying to get that win. We'll need three points."
New England Revolution Midfielder Noel Buck
On returning to action after an injury absence:
Buck:
"It feels great, actually. I've been really looking forward to this moment. I've been working hard in
training, wor
king hard in rehab. It's all led to this moment and I feel good."
On moving on to Wednesday's home match vs. Atletico de San Luis:
Buck:
"You have to move past this game. It's obviously a tough result, but we have to move forward and
get three points on Wednesday."
