Cedric Ceballos Named to Mercury Staff

Phoenix, Ariz. - The Phoenix Mercury announced today that former Phoenix Suns forward Cedric Ceballos has been named as a special assistant coach, assisting Head Coach Carrie Graf for the 2004 season. An 11-year NBA veteran, Ceballos played with five teams including the Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons.

"Cedric will bring a continued level of professionalism and excitement to this Mercury team," said Seth Sulka, Mercury General Manager. "His history as an NBA player proves his commitment and knowledge of the game and we welcome him with open arms to the Mercury family."

An NBA journeyman, Ceballos was originally drafted in the second round (48th overall) by the Suns in 1990. An integral member of the Phoenix Suns 1992-93 Western Conference Champion Team, Ceballos led the NBA in field goal percentage that season, shooting a a 57.6% (381-662) clip.

"Joining the Mercury coaching staff is an exciting day for me," said Ceballos. "I've been around the team for several seasons in a broadcast role and I am anxious to begin my coaching career right here in Phoenix."

In 1992, the Cal State Fullerton grad, participated in the NBA's Slam Dunk contest during All-Star Weekend in Orlando. A blind-folded dunk in the contest earned him a perfect score of 50.0, earning him the title as the NBA's Slam Dunk Champion. Selected to participate in the 1995 NBA All-Star Game, the 6'7" Ceballos did not play due to an injured thumb.

The Mercury begin the 2004 season at home on Thursday, May 20, when they host the Sacramento Monarchs at 7 p.m. inside America West Arena.
