Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders in overtime Saturday night by a final score of 3-2. Cedar Rapids' overtime tally came on its 10th man-advantage opportunity of the game.
Youngstown got on the board first, when Matt Miller scored a shorthanded goal in the final minutes of the second period. It was Miller's third goal of the year, and the Phantoms second shorthanded tally in as many games. Things would turn sour for Youngstown however, beginning with a scrum at the end of the second frame. Both of the Phantoms leading scorers, Cam Morrison and Chase Pearson, were assessed 10 minute misconducts, and missed much of the final period.
The Rough Riders would tie the contest just over halfway through the final period, when Justin Cole snuck a wrist shot past Phantoms goaltender Ryan Bednard. Cedar Rapids would take the lead less than a minute later on the power play, when Cal Burke deflected a shot behind Bednard.
Youngstown would fight back to level the score with exactly four minutes remaining in regulation. After a great shift by Tommy Apap, Kevin Conley, and Alex Esposito, Conley found a rebound on the doorstep to tie the contest at two. The Phantoms would kill off another penalty in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime.
The Rough Riders opened the overtime period on the power play, and were able to take advantage of a 2-on-1 rush that saw Jacob Hayhurst burry a one-timer to win the game for Cedar Rapids.
Youngstown will return to the Covelli Centre next weekend for a series against the Tri-City Storm. Friday, February 5th is Dollar Beer Night, and Saturday the 6th is the Phantoms annual Military Appreciation Night. Anyone wishing to sponsor local military members and their families to attend the game is encouraged to call 330-747-PUCK.
