Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

After missed opportunities and late miscues cost the Gary SouthShore RailCats in game one, Lincoln Saltdogs' starter Shairon Martis shut down the 'Cats offense en route to a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader at the U.S. Steel Yard.

In game one, Lincoln (13-22) got on the board with an Aaron Payne home run in the second inning, but 'Cats starter Rene Solis steadied and didn't give up another run, rebounding from his worst start of the year Sunday in St. Paul.

Gary SouthShore (17-17) scraped out an unearned run in the sixth inning, but gave the game back in the top of the seventh after a bases-loaded walk and error made it a 3-1 ballgame.

In game two, Lincoln put two runs across in the first inning on three hits and a walk, but again the 'Cats starter, this time Chris Cummins, got in his groove, striking out seven through five innings.

But the bats had no answer for Martis, who worked a complete game, allowing only two hits and two base-runners while striking out six.

The 'Cats were shut out for the first time this season Saturday, have matched their longest home losing streak at two and have dropped back to .500 for the first time since May 28.

Saturday was INFEAT Autism Night at the ballpark, as players wore puzzle piece jerseys, which were auctioned off during the games to raise money for autism programs.

The RailCats look to avoid the sweep Sunday at 2:10 p.m. when Charle Rosario (5-2, 5.17) toes the rubber for the home team.
