Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(LAKEWOOD, NJ.) â The Charleston Alley Cats (13-15) took game one 4-2, and won the nightcap 6-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Lakewood BlueClaws (9-19) in the first meeting of the year between the two clubs.
Vince Perkins (3-0) pitched six strong innings in the first game for the win. He allowed two runs on a homerun by G.G. Sato in the fifth, and struck out eight.
The Alley Cats were trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, but Charleston scored three times to claim the lead. Three straight two-out RBI hits by Miguel Negron, Raul Tablado, and Zeph Zinsman gave the Cats a 4-2 lead. Mark Comolli came on in the seventh inning and retired the side in order for his fifth save of the season.
Lakewood took an early 2-0 lead in game two on a two-run homerun by Chad Oliva in the first inning off of Cats starter Ryan Houston (1-0). Houston retired the next 13 batters he faced, struck out eight and earned the win in his season debut. The homerun by Oliva was the only hit of the game for Lakewood.
Charleston tied the game in the second inning on an RBI double by Jason Waugh, and an RBI groundout by John Schneider. The Cats sent eight men to the plate and scored four times in the third inning to take the lead. A sacrifice fly by Tablado drove home what proved to be the winning run. Tablado drove in the winning run in both halves of the doubleheader.
Charleston improved to 9-7 on the road this year. Lakewood has now lost 15 of their last 17 games.
Sandy Nin (0-2, 1.82 ERA) will face Nick Bourgeois (1-0, 2.31 ERA) in the third game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm.
