Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA â The Savannah Sand Gnats (13-14) rallied from a two-run deficit tonight scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a 8-7 victory over the Capital City Bombers (16-11) in the first game of a three game series. Marco Yepez was 1 for 4 on the night with a run scored and had the game-tying single in the ninth inning plating two runs. Newcomer to the Sand Gnats roster, Tim Sweeney led off the ninth with a single to center field. After catcher Josh Emmerick flied out to centerfield, Ja'Mar Clanton blooped a single to right moving Sweeney to second. Leadoff man Reggie Fitzpatrick then reached on a fielder's choice advancing Sweeney to third giving the Sand Gnats runners on first and third. Fitzpatrick would move over to second on a wild pitch putting both runners in scoring position for Marco Yepez. Yepez stepped up to the plate and laced a single to center field scoring Sweeney. Fitzpatrick scored on the play as well, but not before running over Bomber catcher, Jimmy Anderson to tie the game at 7-7. Also, as a result of the play Yepez was able to advance to second. Larry Broadway then had the game winning hit when he skied a Ryan Olson pitch to right field that dropped just to the side of Bomber right fielder Alhaji Turay scoring Yepez and handing the Sand Gnats the 8-7 win. The Bombers and Sand Gnats exchanged leads three times tonight before the Sand Gnats rally in the ninth. Fitzpatrick, Sweeney, and Ja'Mar Clanton each had two hits apiece for the Sand Gnats. Mike O'Connor (2-2) picked up the win in relief for the Sand Gnats. Olsen (0-2) took the loss for the Bombers. Immediately following the game kids can run the bases and Sand Gnat players will sign autographs in the Krystal Play And Party Pavilion. Boar's Head sausages are $2 and 12oz Cokes are $1.
