Charleston RiverDogs News Release

(Charleston-SC)- The Asheville Tourists capitalized on an unearned run in the seventh inning and another in the top of the 12th to topple the RiverDogs 4-3 and send Charleston to its fourth straight loss Saturday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs (15-12) got on the board first on a John-Paul Davis RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Asheville starter Doug Johnson settled down after that, allowing just three more hits before being lifted after the sixth inning.

RiverDogs starter Mike Prochaska held the Tourists in check allowing just two hits in five innings while striking out two. He was replaced by the newest RiverDog, Angel Volquez, who was added to Charleston's roster on Friday.

Volquez surrendered two runs in the top of the seventh, one earned, as Asheville (10-19) finally got on the board.

Charleston tied the score on Wes Bankston's RBI single in the bottom of the inning, scoring Brent Cordell from second base.

The game advanced into the ninth inning knotted at two, when Jason Bartz walked Bernie Gonzalez to lead off the inning. Gonzalez advanced to second on a wild pitch and scampered to third on Bartz's errant pick-off attempt. Ryan Spilborghs gave Asheville the lead with a two out single into leftfield.

The RiverDogs answered once again in the bottom half, after Vince Harrison reached first on a one-out error by Asheville shortstop Oscar Materano. The RiverDogs would load the bases but only manage one run on Wes Bankston's sacrifice fly to right.

The score remained tied at 3-3 until the 12th. Second baseman Walkil Guance singled into left but the ball was misplayed by Nate Dion allowing Guance to advance to second. After stealing third, Guance crossed the plate when Joe Yarbrough (1-3) struck out Jeff Salazar on a pitch that got passed catcher Ronnie Deck, leaving a runner on first and Asheville ahead 4-3.

Charleston and Asheville will play the second game of their three-game series Sunday .

Game time is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
