Hagerstown Suns News Release

On May 3, 2003, Clay Hensley made history for the Hagerstown Suns as he threw a seven-inning perfect game against the Kannapolis Intimidators in game two of a twi-night doubleheader at Municipal Stadium. In retiring all 21 Kannapolis batters that he faced and winning the ball game 2-0, Hensley struck out 10 and induced the other 11 Kannapolis batters that he faced into ground outs.

Before tonight, no Hagerstown Sun had ever thrown a no-hitter, let alone a perfect game. Hensley's effort was the first no-hitter thrown in the South Atlantic League since Lakewood's Gavin Floyd did it on July 24, 2002 against Lexington.

"I'm on cloud nine right now," beamed Hensley. "I knew it from the first toss, when I started warming up that my arm felt really good."

The 23-year-old Hensley attended Lamar University and was drafted by the Giants in the eighth round of the 2002 draft. He posted a stellar 7-0 record last year with Salem-Keizer with an ERA of 2.53. With the no-hitter, Hensley's record improves to 1-1 on the season and his strikeout total now stands at 38 versus only 10 walks in 32 innings pitched.

The Hagerstown Suns, of the South Atlantic League, are the Class A affiliate of the National League Champion San Francisco Giants. The Suns' regular season runs through September 1st. Ticket packages and sponsorships are available by calling 301/791-6266.
