Cats fall to IronBirds

ABERDEEN, MD-The Tri-City ValleyCats fell behind 2-0 to the Aberdeen IronBirds and could not recover from the early defecit, as the IronBirds beat the ValleyCats 7-1 before a capacity crowd of 6, 201 at Ripken Stadium.

Evan Englebrook pitched five innings and gave up two runs in front of about 20 family and friends in from the Harrisburg, PA area. The family and friends drove around an hour and 45 minutes and saw Englebrook give up two runs in the first inning. Rob Marconi walked and advanced to second base on a past ball. Levi Robinson doubled home Marconi for a 1-0 IronBirds lead. Robinson stole third base and was followed by an Eric Sultemeier walk. Morgan Clendenin grounded into a double play and Robinson scored to make it 2-0 Orioles.

The IronBirds 2-0 lead lasted all the way until the sixth inning when Aberdeen added another run off of ValleyCats reliever Bo Edmiston.

Jeff Wigdahl came into the game in the eighth inning and allowed four runs to cross home plate. Morgan Clendenin capped off the inning with his second home run in as many days against ValleyCats pitching. Clifton Park native and Siena College alum Blake Hanan scored the first run of the eighth inning for the IronBirds. He came into the game as a pinch runner for shortstop Evan Brannon.

The ValleyCats scored their sole run of the game in the ninth inning against David Haehnel. Jonny Ash reached base on a fielder's choice then went to third on a double by Edgar Babilonia. Ben Zobrist lofted an RBI single to bring home Ash and round out the scoring at 7-1.

The ValleyCats now finish out their regular season road schedule tomorrow night at Aberdeen. Game time is set for 7:05 and coverage begins at 6:45 on AM 1160 WABY and AM 900 WUAM as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
