Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

AUGUSTA, NJ --- A.J. Wideman and Jim Henderson showed why they are arguably Vermont's best pitchers this season, but both took a loss on Tuesday night as the Expos offense was held silent in a 1-0 and 2-1 doubleheader sweep by the New Jersey Cardinals in New York-Penn League action at Skylands Park.

Wideman (3-1) allowed just one run over five innings in the opener, but the Expos offense was able to muster just two hits. Henderson (2-6) led 1-0 after six shutout innings in game two, but allowed the first two batters in the seventh to reach and they both came around to score to give the Cardinals the sweep.

Vermont got its only run over 14 innings Tueday night in the fourth inning of game two. Newcomer Ian Desmond, an 18-year old infielder taken in the third round of the 2004 draft, had a one-out single in his second at bat for the Expos after his promotion from the Gulf Coast League. After a pickoff error moved Desmond to second, Ofilio Castro singled him home to give Vermont a 1-0 lead.

Henderson, who now has six losses on the season despite a 2.59 ERA, allowed just two hits (both to Tony Granadillo) with no walks and four strikeouts over the first six innings. But he gave up a leadoff double to Levi Webber and a walk in the seventh before being relieved by Gus Hlebovy, who tied Robert Marquez's 1999 record for games pitched with his 29th appearance.

Granadillo hit a bouncer to short that moved both runners up, then scored Webber as Desmond's throw to first got away from first baseman Steve Mortimer. Granadillo was credited with a hit, his third of the game after entering the night 2-for-29 on the season.

With no outs and runners now on the corners, Hlebovy intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases before giving up a single to rightfield to plate the winning run for the Cardinals. Despite leading the league in saves with 15, Hlebovy has now 11 of 13 inherited runners to score.

Wideman allowed just the one run, a second inning RBI double to Cody Palmer, on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. With the one run over five innings, Wideman still lowered his ERA .01 points to 1.81 overall in his 10 starts on the season (4th-best ERA by Expos starter all-time).

With the doubleheader loss, Vermont (32-35) is now 3-7 in 10 doubleheader games this season. The Expos offense can take most of the blame for that record, hitting just .199 (53-for-266) with just 17 runs scored in those 10 games.

Vermont, now 17-18 in road games this season after going just 4-33 last season, play its final road game of the season on Wednesday night with a single game at New Jersey beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Expos will then wrap up the 2004 season at Centennial Field with a four-game series against the Lowell Spinners with a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 6:05 p.m. followed by single games at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
