New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) won two crucial games this evening at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to keep the race alive. Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th and final inning of game two, the Cards bats finally came alive and the club rallied for a 2-1 victory and the doubleheader sweep over the Vermont Expos (Montreal Expos).

Both games were much the same story as the Cardinals (37-34) used stellar pitching and just enough hitting to win a pair of one run games. The Cardinals won the first game, 1-0, behind the strong outing from Cards starter Quinton Robertson (3-2) and the timely hitting of Cody Palmer, who drove in the games only run with a 2nd inning double. A.J. Wideman took the loss for the Expos in game one, and Cory Doyne worked two perfect innings for his 10th save of the season.

In game two, Cards starter Donnie Smith (3-3) threw a complete game masterpiece, holding the Expos to a lone run on 3 hits, but he still figured to get the loss heading into the final frame. And then the tide turned. Levi Webber doubled to right, and Brandon Yarbrough drew a walk. Tony Granadillo followed with an infield single and Tim Cantu, who was pinch-running for Webber, scored the tying run on an errant throw. After a walk to pinch-hitter Casey Grimm loaded the bases, the stage was set for Sam Herbert. After working the count to 3-2, Herbert lined a single to right to give the Cardinals the victory. Jim Henderson (2-6), the Expos starter, was credited with the loss.

Tomorrow night the Cards continue their 6-game home stand when they take on the Vermont Expos in the finale of their 3-game set. The Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) pay a visit to Skylands Park September 2 4 in the final series of the regular season. Thursday, Phils Ford sponsors a Cardinals baseball giveaway, Friday night is fireworks night thanks to Miller Beer and the New Jersey Herald, and Saturday is Rally Cow Bobblehead giveaway day.
