Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg could not hold a two-run lead in extra-innings and had their four-game winning streak snapped with an 8-7 loss in 10 innings at Frederick in the finale of the three-game set on Wednesday night.

Frederick jumped to an early advantage with a four-run bottom of the first inning with the aid of a couple of defensive mistakes. Buck Britton doubled in a pair in the inning and Pedro Florimon plated a run with a triple. Three of the four runs were earned thanks to an error by the Hillcats.

Lynchburg got on the board with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning by Chris Richburg to cut the four-run lead in half. It was Richburg's second home run of the series, his second as a Hillcat and his 16th of the season overall. Frederick added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Xavier Avery scored on a throwing error.

The Hillcats weren't done though as they would plate three runs in the ninth inning to tie up the game at five a piece. Lynchburg still trailed by three runs with two outs when Jose Gualdron doubled in the first run of the frame. The next batter was Shane Carlson and he singled through in the left side to plate a pair tie up the contest. An inning later the Cats took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the tenth inning. Chris Richburg had a sacrifice fly to give them the lead and Kyle Day doubled in a run to make it a 7-5 game.

In the bottom of the tenth inning though Frederick rallied with three runs to pull out the win. Ronnie Welty brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Then with the Keys down to their final strike, Billy Rowell singled in the game tying run to knot up the game at seven. The next batter was Miguel Abreu, and his infield single would score Rowell to give the Keys the walk-off win.

The loss went to Donnie Joseph (0-4) for Lynchburg (14-18, 43-59). Joseph has suffered three of his four losses and both of his blown saves at the hands of the Keys. The win went to Josh Dowdy (1-0) for Frederick (16-16, 57-45), despite giving up five runs in two innings of action and blowing a save. The Hillcats, who still took two out of three in the set, begin a three-game series at Salem on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Memorial Ballpark. Right-hander Curtis Partch (4-8, 5.40) will toe the rubber for the Cats opposite right-hander Brock Huntzinger (7-6, 3.59) for the Red Sox.
